A NOTE FROM OUR NACAC PRESIDENT

Dear PCACAC friends and colleagues:

Please reach out to any of us with questions or comments.

NACAC Rising Star Award!

Leaders from across the field of college admission were recognized last week by NACAC for the contributions they have made to students and to their profession. We are proud to announce that Fatmata Koroma was selected as an individual Rising Star Award recipient.

Since joining Potomac Chesapeake ACAC over four years ago, Fatmata has worked tirelessly to help make the affiliate’s annual conference and other events successful. This year she volunteered to launch the Equity Collaborative on Diversity, Equity and Opportunity in Education—a PCACAC preconference offering. And when one of the scheduled speakers was unable to present due to unforeseen health issues, Fatmata stepped in and led the session.

Fatmata, who recently assumed the role of assistant director of college counseling at St. John’s High School in DC, is passionate about the potential of higher education to change lives and has become an important voice within her affiliate. Through her hard work, Fatmata is constantly striving—often behind the scenes—to contribute to her school, her affiliate, and the profession. Congratulations Fatmata Koroma!

Government Relations Updates:

NACAC Urges Passage Of Funding Bill For Minority-Serving Institutions

The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) expressed its disappointment that the US Senate did not approve legislation that would provide funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs), and other minority-serving institutions. Michael Rose, NACAC Director for Government Relations

Current Trends/Future Issues:

Harvard University does not discriminate against Asian American students through its use of race-conscious admissions, a federal judge ruled in a decision released on Tuesday, October 1, 2019. Eric Hoover writes about the ramifications of the ruling.

On September 30, 2019, California's Governor, Gavin Newsom signed a state bill called the "Fair Pay to Play Act" into law which allows athletes at California universities to earn money from their name, image and likeness starting in 2023.
