Apperson Award

The Richard L. Apperson Award, named in honor of PCACAC's first president, is the association's highest honor presented to a PCACAC member.  It is awarded annually to a member whose career embodies the ideals of the association - providing extraordinary service to students, to PCACAC, and to the college counseling profession. We are pleased to announce that the 2016 Apperson Award winner is Sue Rexford.

Sue Rexford - 2016 Apperson Award Winner

"Much of what we now do today in PCACAC began with one of her ideas," discloses Jayne Fonash, in her tribute to the 2016 Apperson Award winner given on April 18, 2016, with over 350 college admission professionals from across the District of Columbia, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia, present at the 51st Annual Conference in Ocean City, Maryland.

Sue has been a member of PCACAC since 1998 and has served upon and chaired multiple committees:  Conference Planning, Past President's, Nominating, Summer Institute, and Professional Development.  She has represented PCACAC as a NACAC Assembly Delegate and Chief Delegate. Of course, Sue served as the association's President-Elect, President, and Past President beginning in 2005 through 2008.  Her career as a college admission professional began in 1985 at West Springfield High School in Virginia as a College and Career Specialist, and her current role is as the Director of College Guidance at Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Maryland.

Jayne's award presentation from the beginning highlights an exceptional talent that Sue has and continues to share. "One singular paragraph captures the story of our recipient.  We have come to see in her a rare combination of the creative vision and the organizational ability to get a plan done.   Beyond the accomplishment itself, she ensures institutional continuity by mentoring those who will carry on the project.  Her care for college counseling and for the college counseling profession are exceptional, and her students, PCACAC, and NACAC have been the beneficiaries."
